hi all,
I'm needing to increase our storage capacity in a small office environment and wanted to look for some opinions. Currently, we have a 2009 mac mini server connected via firewire 800 to a drobo. the mac mini is then wired to a gigabit network serving 6-8 computers.
We need more storage space, but we also would like to see a little faster performance from the shared files on the drobo. the drobo hosts all our shared office files as well as time machine backups.
my intention was buy a drobo 5d as it sounds like those have quite a big speed gain. But im wondering if that speed gain is based on the thunderbolt connectivity or the architecture of the unit itself. I'm curious about if a new drobo was attached to the existing mac mini via a thunderbolt to FW800 adapter if we might see any speed boost?
My other question was about formatting the drobo. For whatever reason, the existing drobo was setup with multiple 2TB partitions as opposed to one big partition. so there are two partitions for time machine backups and three for files. I never understood this, but it was before my time and it always seemed like more trouble to undo it. but i am thinking about keeping the existing drobo and using it ONLY for time machine backups so that the new drobo only deals with serving up files. would that make sense to do?
thanks in advance for any thoughts.
