My thanks in advance to any and all who can chime in their thoughts. I joined up after a long time lurking to ask this question.

I currently have a 14" Macbook M1 Max w/ 64GB & 2 TB storage. I've been eyeing the M4 Pro / Max as a possible upgrade. I think I'm settling on the M4 Max, mainly because the amount of memory that different models can be specc'd.

My question is this, do you think that 48GB would be enough or should I stay with the 64GB that I have in my current Macbook?
I run Parallels, including it's tool set, and the memory usage seems to hover in the 30-35GB range for most days of my work. Jumping up to the 64GB is another $200 (and requires the higher specc'd Max).

What I tend to run in a day: Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge, Chrome & Safari, MS Office (including largish PowerPoint slide shows being converted to videos). I do a little video work (Final Cut). Photoshop is processing RAW files from my Nikon Z8 - 45+ MP & 4K video (I know it can do 8K, but I don't see the point right now). At the office, I have it docked and running a 37" Widescreen IPS.

I might also downgrade storage to 1TB - because I use less than that on my current machine. I tend to work off of files on SSDs connected through Thunderbolt.

Again, thank you for your time and I hope that you have a great day.

I have the same M1 MBP and have just ordered the 48GB / 4TB Pro. I really needed the storage and this and the nano display were my priorities. I vacillated about the Max/Pro decision, but could not justify another £1000 for a little more memory and the MAX. Hopefully this is the right decision.
