Hi, all. So I'm in the midst of trying to install Lion on my girlfriend's old Macbook 2,1 - 2.16GHZ Core 2 Duo. She doesn't want to spend money on a new Mac so I'm just upgrading it.

I took out the old HDD, installed a Crucial M4, 4GB of RAM and attempted to install Lion using a bootable USB drive. Powered up while holding the Option button. A prompt came up with the USB drive symbol and "EFI" underneath.

After clicking on this, it began reading the USB drive... but nothing happens. Rather, all I see on the screen is a folder symbol with a "?" on it.

What am I doing wrong here? Help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Update: Installed the old HDD and tried installing from the USB drive. I get a prompt saying "You cannot use this version of the application install Mac OS X Lion with this version of Mac OS X."

It seems like something went wrong creating the bootable thumb drive.

Try following a different write-up on how to create it.

I created that bootable drive within Lion when I was upgrading all my computers with Mountain Lion. Could that be the cause? Should i create the bootable USB from within Leopard then copy the Lion installer on to it?
