Please, I badly need help. 
I was on itunes 8 yesterday and I tried to upgrade my 1st generation iphone(I think version 1.1.2) to version 2.1. The process took time but at the end it did not work and my iphone got locked and went on emergency mode. I tried to restore things by clicking on the Restore button on itunes but that did not work either. I got a message saying that my SIM card is not compatible....etc.
My iphone was originally unlocked when I bought it. Since then it was running great and I downloaded several applications on it which have been very helpful. I feel lost today without my iphone.
I am new to all this and have no clue how to restore my iphone back. Did I lose all my contact details, notes, photos, smses...etc?(
Please can someone give me a step by step instructions on how to get my iphone work again. I am really desperate.
I am an expatriate living in Algeria (difficult market!) and I doubt I can find help over here.(
