Upgrading Old Deactivated iPhone 3G To New System Software?

Can it be done and/or synced without messing up my sync to my new iPhone 4?

I'd love to keep this old snail around and use it as an iPhone touch but I'd like to install the newest software 4.0.1. Thanks!

Do not upgrade it ! Just keep the old software in it, mine has been really sluggish with a really bad battery life and it has not WIFI.

I was able to upgrade my old phone just fine, I left my old sim card it in to activate it and it did not effect my iphone 4 at all.

it will definetely upgrade with no problem. It is the aftermath that is the issue
