I have a 1st gen iPhone that we've been using as an ipod touch for my 5yo since I upgraded to the 3GS last June. I'd like to upgrade the firmware on this old phone but I have been holding off due to the phone needing activation right after the upgrade. How can I do this when this phone has no ATT service?

I'd prefer not to jailbreak the thing. I have a second, fully functional 3GS w/ ATT sim card in it as well if that would help in activating this phone somehow. I also have the old SIM card from the old iPhone (which was properly activated) if that would somehow help.

I've read multiple conflicting arguments on this subject so hoping I can get some clarification on how to get it upgraded and keep it activated w/o adding it back to the ATT plan.

Thanks.
