upgrading OS x

I just inherited a 2009 macbook pro. I think the operating system is snow leopard, the version says 10.5.8. How do I upgrade to version 10.6. The reason why, I need 10.6 is because my Blackberry software says I need to use 10.6 or later.
What are the steps to upgrading?

Contact Apple or look on ebay for a 10.6 upgrade disk.

FYI, if you're running 10.5.8, that is Leopard. 10.6.x is Snow Leopard.
