Upgrading Quad core to 8-Core (?)

Sorry to be such a newbie but is this at all possible to do manually? I found a Quad core for a really good price and would like to eventually make it an 8-core.

Any information would be great... Thanks!

depends which mac pro it is .. but the newer ones i believe cannot be done because the boards are different

I have't purchased it yet but it looks like it's the Mac Pro 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

If it is an 09 model then the answer is no.

I see the new 12 cores are coming out soon. I think a 10.7 will be on the way shortly. Think there will be an update from EFI32 to EFI64 for our pre-2009 Mac Pros?

Pre-2008 and no.

10.7 will run just fine on an EFI 32 Mac Pro anyway.
