Crap those things are expensive! Can I buy a 500GB one and just replace the internal hard drive with a 2+TB drive that I buy somewhere else?
Thanks!

Cheaper and easier to buy a refurb AEBS and a USB HDD. Refurb AEBS is selling for $129 and you can easily get a 1 or 2 TB USB drive for under $100.

Sorry, but what is an AEBS?

By the way I meant 500GB one not $500 :)

AEBS= Airport Extreme Base Station.

If you are buying a refurbished AE, make sure that it's a AE 5, not an AE 4. Most reports have the AE 5 having a better range although with similar other features to the AE 4. At least that's been my experience after having both units.

Hm, I'm looking at it and I don't need a router, the AEBS appears to be a router, we're using a shared router that everyone likes.

Yes. I've done it, and it's not hard to replace the TC's internal drive. I followed directions I found here. The hairdryer idea was invaluable!

The harder part might be finding a drive that "spins-down" when idle, like the original drive does. There's a long thread about it here.

As far as I have seen (and I've been pay fairly close attention) they haven't offered any 2011 AEBSs in the refurb store yet.
