hello,
let me start by apologizing for being such a noob. i have an iphone 3gs, and current have 4.2 as my version. how do i upgrade to ios 5, without going all the way to 6?
thank you to anyone who is kind enough to help me with this process.

You can't. Apple does not provide any sort of upgrade to an iOS that has been replaced by a newer OS. You're only option available is to go to 6.1.3
