upgrading to maverick issue

I am tyring to upgrade from lion to maverick. I have vmdk file but it doesnt open in mac. How do i upgrade using this file

vmdk is a virtual disk file. You cannot upgrade to Mavericks with that. Get the OS from the Mac App Store.

bah i cant download maverick from app store it keeps disconnecting download and starting from zero again. Thats why i downloaded vmdk file.
Any other way to upgrade??
