I have an early 2008 MBP. It has served me very well over the years, although it is slowing down a bit.

For the most part, now though, I have been using my iPad as my primary device, and it does a great job overall (Love the portability and the battery life, but the internet still needs some work adapting some website to work on it).

I was contemplating trading in my laptop for a new one, but I had a question: I've already been through 2 batteries in this thing. Just last week, I came home from work to find my laptop hovering at an angle, because the battery in it had decided to start ballooning. (It was only a year old, and I was tempted to bring it to Apple to see what they said, but it had ballooned so large I didn't think it would make it to the store, so I brought it to the battery waste center to dispose of it, hoping to prevent a fire or something in my house... It took a screwdriver to try and remove it from the computer itself...).

If those batteries are so terrible, how are these new MBP's with built in batteries holding up?

I'd hate to spend a few grand on a new laptop to have it have the same terrible batteries this one has. Which is why I'm almost tempted to get an iMac, to sacrifice portability for reliability.
