Upgrading via another users line, ATT or Apple Store? Where did you go 2G/3G/3GS

I'll be upgrading using another users line on our account, I am an authorized user on the account.

I'd prefer to get my phone at the Apple Store, are they able to do this just as well as AT&T?

From what I was told I can use another persons upgrade and just keep my plan, I just want to make sure there's nothing specific that makes this something I have to do at AT&T.

Has anyone here bought an iPhone using someone else's upgrade at the Apple Store?
