The first thing I did when I got my Mac was unload my music from an external drive. I set up a folder on my desktop to download into. I thought all was fine. Now I notice in Finder that I have over 4000 songs. (not near that many). Most were duplicates and in a real mess. Each had been in a folder by artists. I have delete all and will start over, but does anyone know what I did wrong? I just want the songs in my music folder on the desktop, and only want one copy of each song in the folder it was in from the external drive. I will not let the Mac beat me!! Thanks for all help in advance. Promise I will learn yet.

Have you not though about using iTunes? Just open iTunes and drag all your music into the main window. If you want to use iTunes without the external drive connected, have the Copy to iTunes Media Folder option ticked in iTunes preferences.
