I realize, now that I have an external TB drive for my MBA, that I need a UPS (rather than just a good surge protector). My set-up is pretty basic: MBA, ACD and TB Drive. Everything else (speaker, printer, etc.) can just go on the surge protector. I'd like something that works with the Mac OS to shut down the computer after 10-15 minutes on battery power (although I need to deal with Tune-Up, with prevents shutdown until I manually close it).

The APC units look to be the ones to get, and it seems that long-term, one with a sine-wave output would be better/more compatible. Can anyone recommend a particular unit? I'm looking at the SMT1000 (about $400) and the SMC1000/1500 ($240/$300). I don't need to protect coax, ethernet, etc., just back-up power/surge protection, so I'm leaning towards the SMC line, which seems to skip a lot of the extras I won't need.

Many thanks.
