Hi!

I am considering a new Macbook Pro for editing 4k video and may be purchasing TONIGHT!

Do you think a 2.8 GHz will be efficient? How about a 2.5? It will have 16GB RAM.

Also, does having the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5 memory make a difference in video editing or is that more for 3D stuff?

I will be using iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

Any help, please, would be much appreciated!

Thank you so much in advance!

Brian

I use the latest Macbook Pro (2.5Ghz, 16, GT 750) as my mobile workstation and it handles 4K (even non optimized, fairly heavy GH4 h.264 files) really well. I think 2.5 should be enough and recommend getting discrete GPU although latest intel GPUs are also quite powerful.

Thank you! I will be using the h.265 codec but I may have to convert it first. With that said, do you still feel that way? Thanks so much!

Currently there's very limited hardware acceleration for h.265 codec as it hasn't been widely adopted yet. h.265 is also mathematically way more complex than h.264 and thus requires a lot more horsepower (if encoded/decoded in software). I haven't tested h.265 on my machine but I think current cpus have what it takes to decode it fairly well.

The CPU bump isn't worth it, but getting the GT 750M is crucial. It will greatly help in rendering.
