Can anyone please help me?

I have been sent a file with a .dat extension, and am unable to open it. Can anyone tell me what software I need to open such a file? Can it be done without buying software?

I know that the file is safe, and I desperately need to open it.

Many thanks for any help.

Thank you.

Text editor opens the file, and some of it is even readable. However most, probably more than 30 pages, is obviously encrypted in some way and appears only as gobledy gook!

Houston, I have a problem!

Thanks again Giant.

Just tried Textwrangler, but no joy I'm afraid. I still have a very large amount of info which looks like it has been encrypted. Apparently random characters in place of the data I would expect to find.

It is a file relating to the use of our products in a particular country. Sent at the request of a third party supplier.

Time zone differences make it difficult to contact them direct before the expiration of our deadlines. We therefore need to find a way of reading this file urgently.

What then is the intended application for opening dat files, and can I get access to it for free?

I'm not sure what you mean.

It is an attachment sent by email and is shown as file type .dat

From the link provided to you above:

Generic data file created by a specific application; typically accessed only by the application that created the file; may contain data in text or binary format; text-based DAT files can be viewed in a text editor.

It's not solely a text-based file, so you can't use a text editor to look at the entire file.
