Can a mac access files on another mac via the file:// in the URL using firefox?

If so how would I construct the URL?

I have tried file://<ip address>/<path to file> but it doesn't work.

Any thoughts?

They would need to have file sharing turned on. Then depending on the protocol you'd access it in different ways.

Also depending on if they are behind a router or not there may be additional configuration for them to do on their end.

If they have file sharing turned on it'll look something like,

smb://ip/folder/file.ext

It may use the afp protocol also.

I don't believe it will work with file://

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason for not just uploading it to the website? Otherwise even if you get it working you'd need to have your computer on 24/7 and it would be utilizing your bandwidth.

Share it through web sharing then when a person uses a web browser, it will work automatically.

file:// works locally on a mac so there has to be some way for it to work across a network. I don't want to have to worry about uploading it to the website. Bandwidth is not an issue as its internal.

I guess this could work but it would be easier to use file:// if possible.
