It's possible. I called around two three stores two weeks ago everyday and was able to find at least two of those stores had phones at opening.
Keep in mind that you won't be able to just buy one without having an AT&T iPhone account open to use it on. Contract free doesn't mean you can just buy one without having AT&T service to use it on. They won't sell it without verifying that you have an AT&T iPhone account that you will use it on. AT&T and Apple stores are really strict on this.
