Before you do that make sure the phone is unlocked as well as being compatible with the networks in Vietnam.

You still need to make sure it's unlocked and compatible with the frequency bands used by the local networks. The mobile phone market is different in the US and not all phones are necessarily sim free and unlocked. Also different models have different combinations of frequency bands. It's not as simple as just buying the phone from where ever.
