US car with navigation ship to Europe ?

Hello..
I am thinking about buying a Mercedes Benz GL 450 with Navigation and ship it to my country in Europe (The Czech Republic ).i have heard that nav may not work in Europe due to copy rights!!??. Does anyone know what is the difference between a Navigation in US VS Europe if any ? Would that navigation have to be replaced in order it to work?

More than likely, the hardware will continue to work just fine. However, you will likely not get any detailed local maps. You might get major roads, or you might get just outlines of the countries or land masses, or maybe nothing at all.

On most of these systems, there is a DVD drive someplace in the car that holds a data disc with all the maps, points of interest, etc. A car delivered to the US most likely only has US or perhaps all of North America loaded into it.

You may be able to purchase a new disc for Europe, once you get the car there, however, it's possible that due to market differences, it may not work with your vehicle.

Your best source of information would be Mercedes for the car you have chosen. You probably want to talk to their "Military Sales" or "Diplomatic Sales" departments, or, if they have a "European Delivery" program (US buyer purchases a US-spec car at a US dealer, but takes delivery in Europe, uses the car for a holiday, then the MFR ships it to the selling dealer in the US), talk to them, as they may have the answers for you.

Also, look on the web for M-B clubs or forums, where you might be able to get a better answer.

They are not hard-coded, 99% of the time even if the unit stores the maps on the hard drive, there's a DVD you can buy for your region that'll update the unit (or replace the maps) as necessary.

The navigation should work when you get the EU DVD. Unfortunately the radio probably will not.
