US iPhone with foreigner carrier

Hi there,
next month I will go for an extended period (at least 6 months) to Taiwan (time to improve my mandarin ) and I'd like to keep using my iPhone 3G (purchased in the US). Will it work with a carrier other than AT&T?
If not, is there a way to make it work?

What's your baseband (a.k.a., modem firmware)?
You have to jb and unlock it to use another provider's SIM card.
Go to iclarified for tutorials.
