A friend wants to buy an iPad in the USA and would like the 3G version to use here in the UK. If the AT&T version, say, is bought without a contract from Apple, can he just bring it to the UK and put a UK SIM card in it - or is it carrier locked to AT&T SIM cards?

Any problems with this or is it identical hardware to UK version?

iPads are not sold on contract in the US, they are purchased outright and are unlocked for use on GSM systems worldwide.

Good news! So are the AT&T and Verizon identical hardware wise? Or would my friend be better getting one or other if the intention is to use in UK?
