I know I have similar post about hubs, but I have had no replies to that, and this might be more to the point, so sorry to the web master here, the threads can be merged if that would be better.

I am looking for a powered USB hub to use with my classic mac pro 5,1. Since it is USB 2.0, would I be netter getting a USB 2.0 hub? would it be more compatible than the newer USB 3.0 hubs?

or would any of the newer USB 3.0 or higher hubs work?

and can I plug in a keyboard, mouse, trackpad or wacom tablet into the hub? so long as it is powered?

I plan on using the hub for less critical items, and reserving the built in computer USB ports for more crucial items like my external hard drives, and what ever else would be best plugged directly into the computer's USB ports.
 
I think that the USB3 hubs are backwards compatible.

But, if you have a spare PCI slot, you could get a PCI USB3 card. You can shop around for cheaper ones, but this was the first one to come up in a search:
