USB 2 ports suddenly are slow ... ?

I have two memory sticks (loads of space on both of them.)

For about seven days now I noticed that they are incredibly slow (about usb1 speed) and I don't know why?

I have 10.5.4 OS , 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad, 8 GB Ram with about 5 usb2 ports.
I tired ports at both the back and front - same result.

Any ideas ?

Similar problem here with G5 Quad, 10.5.5. I have an external WD 500 GB attached on USB 2.0. Sometimes it works really fast but then it seems to switch to USB 1.0 speed. Sometimes restarting works or re-mounting the external works but not allways.

Couldn't find any hint so far.

Any ideas?

I've noticed that USB 2.0 on Macs are crummy speeds compared to Windows. That is one thing I envy with Windows users.
