I'm running out of USB ports and wonder which options I have if I want to try avoiding a powered USB-hub (so that I can avoid switching on yet another item every time I use the Mac). I'm on a Mac Pro 5,1 (mid-2010).
From what I've read, the built-in Mac Pro USB-ports can only output 500 mA each and I'm guessing this only means a couple of low-powered devices (like my wired Apple extended keyboard with mouse connected to the additional USB connector on the keyboard), or a single USB musical keyboard controller, Wacom drawing tablet etc.
But since I also have a USB-3 PCIe card installed (Sonnet Allegro 4-port USB-C USB3C-4PM-E) with a couple of unused ports, would it be an idea to attach a USB-C cabled hub to one of its ports, which could supply enough power to the hub itself and 3 or 4 additional devices?
It's a little unclear if its USB-3 ports would supply additional power (1.5A) to the additional ports of the hub, or something else as I'm not sure what "USB type-C charging" means. Here's from the card's specs:
