USB 3 SSD running slooooooowww

I have a USB 3 enclosure with an external 1tb ssd in it, its slowed to a crawl, 17MB/s

I've read TRIM does nothing on external drives, how can i speed it up?

If it's getting hot it may be throttling.

Are you sure it’s actually connected at USB 3.0 speed? It could be a problem with the cable or enclosure.

the drive is listed under USB 3.0 Bus in system information.

It used to give 400-500MBs

its a 1TB drive with 115GB free

I converted to APFS hoping to speed it up, made no difference on my first speed test after do so. Since then its dropped to 5MB/s
