Can someone help me identify which items I would need to buy to connect a new MBP with USB C with my old Firewire 800 drives? I found a thread that states:
TB3-->TB2 + TB2-->FW800 adapter

I would likely buy them from Amazon or another online vendor, but not sure if there is a male/female option for each/any of them. Can anyone post the adapters they have purchased that actually worked?

Going forward, what external drives should I purchase?

Thanks

It would be a combination of

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD464LL/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
and
https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter

However, depending on the enclosures you have (e.g., provided they aren't a high-end multibay RAID enclosure or a crazy long chain), it may be a good bit cheaper to just buy USB-C/USB-microB enclosures, remove the drive from the FW800 enclosure, and pop the drive in the USB enclosure. You would get faster working speeds as well.

Going forward, you would probably want to purchase USB enclosures (connector on the drive-side doesn't really matter as they make type-C cables that go to every iteration, but for the sake of convenience and reversibility, USB-C is certainly nice to have)...if you plan to put SSDs in them or plan to buy a multi-bay enclosure, you might as well purchase one that supports USB 3.1 gen 2 (10 Gbps) to take advantage of the higher working speeds it can enable over gen 1.
