Between using a USB WiMAX modem or accessing a MiFi-like device via wireless, which in your opinion would consume lesser power?

You mean your computer's battery power? The external Mifi transmitter. Macs are good with Wifi power usage, and would save power compared to having to power the USB adapter itself.

Yeah, the Mac's power.

Would you think the power usage difference is substantial?

Probably not significant difference really. For convenience of only having to worry about one battery to charge, the USB would be good.

Advantage to the Mifi is if you ever want to let someone else use your connection or if you want to use it with a non computer like an iPad (due to software installations).

Okay, gotcha. If I can get a used USB modem I think I'll try running some tests.
