USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter

I'm looking for something to power the 12" MacBook and connect it to an external monitor using Display Port or HDMI (monitor is not USB-C) at the same time. The obvious choice would be the adapter from Apple:

But the reviews there are terrible... Is it really so bad, or is this just a small selection of people who had a bad experience or maybe the wrong expectations?

And are there good alternatives, apart from a dock?

According to The Wirecutter this is a good alternative: Satechi’s Slim Aluminum Type-C Multi-Port Adapter. Still some issues according to the reviews, but overall much better received, and comparable in price.

I've had this adapter for over two years now and I've never had an issue with it.
