I have this USB-C dock from Iogear

Connected to it I have a mini display port to hdmi cable going to my external monitor. Often my 2017 Macbook Pro will work with the lid closed and wakes so long as I have the ac adapter also plugged into the dock.
Every now and then nothing I do gets it to work and it does not show on my external monitor. The odd thing is if I open the lid to my macbook the wallpaper is the stock Macos wallpaper which is not my normal desktop....so it has to be registering something.
I have tried power cycling the macbook and everything to no avail tonight.
Any ideas?
