Hello ,

my question for Thunderbolt and external harddrive users:

if one uses a newer portable USB-C Gen2x2 SSD based Harddrive and connects it via Thunderbolt3/4, will it get the full speed, or does it fallback to a lower speed, like USB-C Gen2 only?
If it gets full speed, i suppose the same happens if one connects the Harddrive to a USB-4 port (provided it is gen2x2 and does hence not go above 20Gbps)

Thank you.

I don't know of any Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 ports that can do USB 3.2 higher than gen2x1 10 Gbps.

You could try connecting a gen2x2 USB PCIe card to Thunderbolt, but macOS hasn't been updated to support gen2x2 20 Gbps yet - at least not from the ASM3242 that I tested with an Intel Mac mini 2018 running Ventura 13.3.
