What is your preference when it comes to adding a USB-C type hub to your iPad Pro/Air4?

I'm thinking cable on because it add less stress on the USB-C port.
Plus, it can be used for future products like a MacBook Air/Pro and Mac mini.

Any thoughts or experience?
Also any specific ones you would recommend for say under $40

Exactly for these reasons, also hubs tends to get hot. Better to stay away from the iPad body.

How are the extension cables as I’ve read mixed things along with the fact that they shouldn’t really be used?
General tips would be buying from reputable brands and pick up the ones with shorter length.
Mine is from UGreen with 50cm length, works fine. No problem so far.

Right. I have two of them - short, 6" - that work fine with my USB-C & iPad (and with my laptop. Full data, video, and charging functionality.

I use the NOVOO 5 in 1 USB-C Hub and I have had a good experience with the brand and with the hub. There are also larger options available, depending on what ports you want. Novoo's high-end model is $40. It works great with my Macbook Pro.
