Usb connection/mounting problems

I can't get my external drive or USB drive to mount. They insert fine, in any of the usb ports of my 2008 iMac and flash normally. They never show up in finder, and verify & repair in Disk utlity doesn't work. My phone works fine though.
 
Annoyingly, restarting solves it. In the past I suppose they became more flakey as uptime went on, maybe 50% success rate at 10 days and 0% at the 18 it was. Is that it?
