I have a USB drive (8GB - i think its a mini HDD rather than flash) which i haven't used for a while and i lend it to friends a lot. Since i last got it from a friend i haven't used it until now and it doesn't seem to work! I plug it in to my mac and the light on the device comes on but then it doesnt come up on the desktop. Does anyone know of a way i can see if it works, maybe with some diagnostic software??

Open Disk Utility and see if it sees it and can mount it. Otherwise I suggest trying on other machines.

me too

Hi,

I have a simular problem:
USB stick (128 MB, brand unknown, FAT16 structure)
- succesfully mounts on several windows machines
- succesfully mounts on my iBook G3 (10.3)
- does NOT mount on my new Alu iMac (10.4) using the USB port on the keyboard or on the iMac itself. The device does not pop up in /Volumes/

When I open Diskutil, the disk suddenly mounts and is shown on the desktop.

Any explanations? How can I correct this problem?

Thanks!

Could you be having the same problem as in this thread?
