USB Drive won't mount - "MakeDevice error"

So, I bought a Maxtor USB drive that I don't really like. It's always been slow on mounting, and I left it formatted for PC so I could connect it to PCs without installing software. But, the other day, I realized I couldn't put files larger than 2GB on it, which is pretty much all I needed it for (backups, you know), so I decided to reformat it.

I dump all relevant data to a (brand new) PC, unplug it, and plug it back into the Mac where it usually is, but to my surprise, it won't mount at all. Error logs say:

Since it won't mount, it can't format.

I have successfully plugged in a USB mouse, and two other USB drives (one even another Maxtor) without a problem.

Why did plugging this thing into my new PC seemingly fry the drive? Why does it STILL mount in XP, but not my Mac?
