USB DVD Drives

might be a dumb question but just want to double check

the dvd drive on my 2007 macbook is starting to fail (doesn't read some discs)

are there any compatibility issues with external drives or can I just buy the cheapest I can find and it will work (just need it to read not bothered about writing discs)

it's a normal case for obsolete optical drive, moreover the disc is scratched, it will be hard to read by optical drive.
