How fast would it be if I booted Mac OS X off a USB flash drive. Would it be comparable to the speed of the internal drive?

Slooooooooooow

I formatted a 16 Gb thumb drive to boot my MBP. It worked but the result was slower than running off a DVD. Lots of long beach balls. I wanted to do it as an emergency boot incase my HD ever became disabled. I finally just partitioned a Firewire drive and copied my disk image over to it using CarbonCopyCloner. That works great.

Yeah USB thumbdrives are extremely slow. Was playing with one this week.
