USB HD on AEBS

I just bought a 500GB hard drive/hub to connect to my AEBS. All seems fine and the drive is on my desktop. Copying files is VERY slow. I tried copying a single movie file, 1.22GB and it took 5 minutes. Is that normal?

I have my MacPro wired to the base station via ethernet. The base station is connected to the hard drive with a usb cable.
