The headphone jack is broken on my 2012 MB Pro. Could you please suggest one that will allow me to plug in headphones for sound? I would prefer one with a cable before the female headphone jack, so it doesn't block other ports on the Macbook. Thank you so much for any response.

Hi, thanks so much Fishrrman. Like this one, you mean. I probably would buy the extension as you suggest.

How does the OS know to route audio through this, as if it were the headphone adapter? Do they come with drivers that handle that?

No drivers necessary. It's just another USB device. Use the Sound panel in system prefs to set the Plugable as the output (or input and output if it also has a mic). Unlike a normal headphone 3.5mm minijack port, plugging in a USB sound device doesn't automatically mute your Mac speakers. And in fact you can use Audio Midi to aggregate devices so that you can get sound through USB as well as your Mac speakers if you need that.
