USB Hub and External 2.5" HD

Hi :)

I have just purchased a USB hub as I only have one working USB port on my Early 2011 MBP. I was told that I wouldn't be able to power my USB external HD from it however as it wouldn't have enough power to do so.

I have just tried it today though and have managed to use the hub to power the HD and also a mouse...anyone have any idea how it's able to do this? I also thought the HD wouldn't be able to draw enough power from the port through the HUB too..
