I have an 8 port usb hub with two external hard drives connected to it along with my printer and cable for ipod/iphone. Lately I have been experiencing an issue where I can't access any of the files on one or both of the hard drives. Tonight it was one hard drive as I was doing encodes with handbrake. It stopped with an error and when I checked the drive I noticed I could see all the folders on the drive but none of the data files were showing up. I had to unplug and reconnect the hard drive before I could access the files again.
I have had it do this on two separate drives (both drives work perfectly when connected directly to my iMac) I recently moved the power adapter for the usb hub to the wall directly instead of a power strip based on some sites I read stating that might be a cause.
I'm at a loss as to why it seems to drop one hard drive and not another on the hub or why it is dropping it at all. I don't get the message you normally get when you just unplug a external so its like its not really losing connection to the drive just losing access to the data files.
Any thoughts? Perhaps its a cheap hub and I need one that is more heavy duty? I have all my movies and itunes music library on the externals and my time machine backup is it just too much for my cheapo hub?
