Hi

I've recently got a 'new' 2015 MacBook Pro. It's been fine so far, but I was having some issues with fans, so I just reset the SMC and PRAM

Then when I started it up my official apple USB keyboard doesn't work. It was working 10 minutes ago, and it works on my other Mac.

I read a few other people with similar problems but no solutions I could find.

It works when I plug in a non powered USB hub, which is really odd. I've tried all the ports, going to system report and refreshing the USB section, restarting etc. It just only works with the hub now.

All my other USB devices work fine straight in. Any idea how this could have happened or how to fix it?

Thanks

A test for you to try:
1. Power down the new MBP
2. Disconnect ALL USB devices, INCLUDING the hub
3. Connect the Apple wired keyboard -- it should be the ONLY device connected.
4. Power up
5. Is the keyboard recognized now?

Thanks. Thats weird I tried that before and nothing happened. I just tried it again and it did work, but then when I unplugged it and plugged it back in it didn't! I tried multiple times on the left port and nothing. Then I tried the right port and it works in that, but not the left!!

But still if I use the little non USB hub it works straight away. Its so weird!

Any ideas?

Could be bad connection between the cable and the port...

I'm certain it's not, because it's been working fine for weeks, until today I reset the SMC and Pram. Also the keyboard works fine on other computers, and all usb devices work fine in that port on the MacBook.

I've read a lot of other people having a similar problem, its really frustrating to have to troubleshoot so many annoying little issues when Macs are supposed to be hassle free! I'm using just a MacBook and the official keyboard :)

The Apple Wired USB Keyboard on my cMP is randomly disconnecting as well. I can unplug/replug the thing and it will work again. I was leaning towards this being a Logic Board issue, but it’s been suggested to me that my Apple Keyboard my be failing.

Did you ever resolve your issue, and if yes, what was the solution?

Sorry I never did. I just use the other USB port for my keyboard. Its very strange and seems to be an intermittent issues, something software related. I just cant spend all my time fixing computer problems or I'd be at it all day :)

Good luck

I had this problem with one Mechanical keyboard and it happens rarely but frequently enough so that I made a video about it. I brought it into the Apple Store and they replaced the logic board, and, that didn't fix it. I suspect that it's something to do with the keyboard (macOS isn't supported). I've only had this problem with that one keyboard.

At least you were able to isolate it to the keyboard only.

I had the problem with an old musical USB keyboard. After an OS update my MacBook couldn’t see it, even though the connection light on the keyboard lit when I plugged it in.

It only works if it goes through a non-powered USB hub. So it’s defintely a software problem.
