Just got my new 2018 Mini. I have Logitech K750 wireless keyboard and G602 wireless mouse (each with their own USB dongles, 2.4 ghz), so I knew I was going to run out of USB ports if I didn't get a USB hub, so I got this Anker 4-Port USB A 3.0 hub (https://www.amazon.com/Anker-4-Port-Macbook-Surface-Notebook/dp/B00XMD7KPU).

I have my mouse and keyboard on a tray I move to my couch sometimes and work from there since one of my screen is my TV. When I had my Mac Pro I never had an issue. The problem is when I get semi away from the Mini now, the keyboard will have large delays or straight up stop until I move it closer. I thought it was just the battery charge being low on the keyboard, but the problem went away immediately when I went near the mini. It also disappeared by plugging one of the dongles directly into one of the USB A ports, but that negates the objective of having a hub and available ports (I will still need USB A ports for my wired printer and scanner).

Has anyone else run into this on their Mini or mac setup? Do I need to buy a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C hub instead? Does it need to be powered?

EDIT: Of course as soon as I say about it not being an issue if one is plugged directly in to one of the USB A ports, the mouse gets all studdery there too. Really confused :-/

Would both keyboard and mouse be compatible with one of the "Logitech unifying receivers"?

If so, I'd do this:
1. Get the unifying receiver
2. Get a USB3 "male-to-female" extension cable, 3' long.
3. Plug the extension cable into one of the Mini's A ports
4. Plug the unifying receiver into the female end of the extension cable
5. Configure the extension cable so that it "hangs out in front of" the Mini, closer to the keyboard and mouse.

This should solve the lagging problems with the hub, and also bypass any interference present near the Mini's USB ports.

Personal experience:
I DO NOT USE wireless keyboard.
ALWAYS a "wired" keyboard for reliability.
I DO use a Logitech wireless mouse, and keep its receiver plugged into the USB port on the end of my keyboard (OLD McAllay "iMediaKey").

Fishrrman The mouse has it's own unique dongle/frequency, otherwise correct I would have used just one. I too would use a wired setup if possible, but I use a portable lap desk (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0090NNFHS/) so I can use it while sitting on my couch.

I had like a 3 meter USB 3 extension cable which I hooked up and plugged the USB hub to which also had the USB keyboard and have it closer towards me. So far that seems to be working, so will keep testing.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has run into this with their Mini so I could rule out a hardware failure.

So no on else has run into these kinds of problems with their Mini and using hubs?

The Mac mini 2018 is notorious for having Bluetooth connection problems with keyboards, mice and trackpads. You are not alone.

Well

Well my connections are all USB wireless. I've done a bunch of testing and also bought a thunderbolt 3 / USB C hub to try instead of the USB A I had, and the same issue occurs when I plug in my USB dongles for my mouse/keyboard; delayed lag or missed input. It always disappears when I plug the dongles directly into the Mini.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue? Especially with the Logitech K750 wireless keyboard.
