I have been researching USB- NAS adapters that will allow one to simply plug in an existing external USB storage device and provide network accessible storage. There are a number of options out there, but my research has generally produced less then acceptable user reviews (especially for Mac OS centric uses).

Here are some options

-Apple airport with USB plug - expensive
-Addonics (less than stellar reviews, FAT32 only)
-SimpleNET (HFS+ support, no clear examples of happy Mac OS customers)
-Vantec NST-600NU Nexstar FX Gigabit NAS Adapter for USB Hard Drives & Printers (have not researched yet)
-Patriot Gear Box 10/100 Ethernet LAN to USB NAS Network Attached Storage Adapter Black (less than stellar reviews, FAT32 only)
-PogoPlug (no sure how workable it is for local sharing as it appears to be designed for remote sharing)

If anyone has further comments, reviews, suggestions for other products that are mac friendly let me know
