I've tried a USB thumb drive and an external hard drive and they show up without any files but once windows files are on it they aren't recognized. I ran bootcamp and did the whole partition and then it goes to a gray screen. It just sits on the gray screen so I power if off and restart i get a black screen saying unable to find boot device. I restart holding option key and i only get mac hard drive and recovery. I have a 2010 MacBook Pro running mavericks. Any ideas?

how did you make the current USB?

I used boot camp to make the USB

----------

I picked up an USB DVD drive and got it hooked up. Restarted holding the option key and I got the windows disc to show up but when I clicked on it I got the black screen saying insert boot disk. So now I started from scratch with bootcamp and it just when to the gray screen so hopefully it works this way.

It has to be the internal SuperDrive, not an external one.

That's the issue, it wants the internal. I think either get it repaired or see if the following works for you
