USB slot of external monitor not working

I recently bought an external monitor from Dell and connected it to my Macbook using the Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. When I tried to use the USB slot on the monitor, it didn't read my USB drive or other devices. Is there a way to get it to work?

You need to connect a USB cable from the Mac to the monitor.
