USB to Firewire Conversion

My Panasonic Video Camera only has a USB output that can download to the new iMovie software.
I want to use the OLD iMovie software, but it only accepts firewire connections. How can I get the movies from the Panasonic into the old iMovie HD program?

Can you import via Firewire to files on disk and then have iMovie use those files? It's a two-step process, I know, but Firewire and USB are not directly compatible/convertable (you can't buy a simple USB <--> Firewire converter or cable).
