usb webcam not being recognised

hello all, I hope someone can help (and save me from using an old windows HP laptop)

I have a late 2011 MBP so USB2 and a Microsoft xbox live webcam that has been modified for astrophotography use (as a guide cam for those interested). When I upgraded to El Cap the webcam simply stopped working. That is, the macbook will not even acknowledge that its plugged in. It works fine on another mac running Yosemite and also on an old HP windows 7 laptop.

Does anyone know how I can get it to work again on my MBP?

Ok a little more info...

Did PRAM reset, nothing.

Did SMC reset, nothing.

Did SMC reset with camera plugged in and it worked but only until I unplugged it then it failed to recognise when plugged back in.

Any ideas?
