So my PB is a bit too far from my wireless router to have a consistently strong wifi signal. Moving either the computer or the router is not an option. Has anybody used any sort of usb wifi dongle? Do they help?

Alternatively, I have a cantenna that's just lying around. Is there any way to hook that up to a 12'' PowerBook?

Being that the signal from the wireless router is the problem, a USB WiFi dongle may not be the best fix unless it is super sensative. If you can find an inexpensive one it couldn't hurt to try.

Your best bet is to get a higher powered antenna (which will be a higher priced alternative) such as this one or this one, so something similar.

If you do a google search for integrating your existing cantenna, you should be able to find a couple of solutions.
